Bangunan masjid ini siap dibina pada 1958 dan menjadi salah satu contoh seni bina moden Islam. Masjid dibina dalam sebuah lagun buatan di tepi Sungai Brunei.Ia memiliki menara dibuat daripada marmar dan kubah utama bersalut emas. Masjid sendiri dikelilingi taman, pelbagai pokok dan pancuran air.Sebuah jambatan turut dibina bagi menghubungkan masjid dengan Kampong Ayer di tengah sungai Brunei. Masjid ini juga sering digunakan untuk acara Tilawah al-Quran.
