PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has advised against spreading images of a 16-year-old Sarawakian girl who took her own life after holding a vote if she should do so on social media.

In a statement on Wednesday , MCMC urged more sensitivity for the girl's grieving family, adding that police are investigating if the online voting had elements of abetting the suicide.

"Under Section 305 of the Penal Code, it is against the law to abet a person under 18 to commit suicide, which can lead to 20 years in prison and a fine. "The MCMC will provide any technical assistance required by the police in this case," said the statement."Any cases of cyberbullying, or inappropriate content can be reported directly to us via email on aduanskmm@mcmc.gov.my or WhatsApp at 016-220 6262," said the statement.
