The prime minister says the government's recent decision to increase intake into matriculation centres would mean more non-Malays too using the easy way to get into universities.

PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today weighed in on the debate over the limited number of places for non-Malay students at the government’s matriculation centres, saying the pre-university programme was designed to make it easier for Malays to enter universities.

“So we provided a back door for them. It was entirely meant as a back door for the Malays,” the prime minister said during an interview session with the media at his office here. The programme is popular as it is much cheaper than pursuing other pre-university courses at private institutions, apart from allowing greater chances of entering public universities.

Mahathir said the government’s decision to increase the intake was in response to complaints that non-Malays who performed better could not get a place in the matriculation programme.

The Matriculation route must not be a soft touch. It must achieve the same standards to ensure our education does not produce two tier of graduates & devalue the Matriculation route. Give extra help for all students so that they meet the standards. Don’t compromise standards.

Haha 🤣 more is a stupid way to mislead or whatever when you are also looking at more Malays attending Matriculation. Why not scrape STPM so all can enjoy backdoor to public universities?

Who doesn’t want an easy way if given a choice.

This all can be resolved if we have a one standardized system with giving some leeway for the less performing malays.

Wat a stupid statement by a PM?

even the non-malays love using backdoor. thats why they’re asking for increase in matriculation quota.

really screwed up politicians...make a shortcut then take all the best teachers( nons) and make them teach the shortcut students

It still remain 1 out of 10 non-Malay using d backdoor. It wud hd bn a good argument instead of trivialising it hd d no. is 5 out of 10 r non-malays.

So scrap matriculation, we need quality graduates and not just for name sake
