BEIJING: Goh Chye Poh had a few sleepless nights when she heard there was a Covid-19 outbreak in the district where she is staying.

The doctorate student at the Beijing Language and Culture University was worried, but a timely phone call from the Malaysian Embassy here and her supervising teacher solved her problem. As of Thursday, the Chinese capital had recorded a total of 183 locally transmitted cases since June 11, with most of them related to the Xinfadi wholesale market in Fengtai, a suburb district, south of Beijing.

When she first heard of the outbreak, the Taiping lass thought it could be just isolated cases, until it showed a daily double-digit growth, with confirmed cases jumping from six cases on June 12 to 36 cases the following day.

"When the emergency response level was lowered , I could see many people roaming around and exercising, while children were playing in the compound without their masks.
