PETALING JAYA: The Government should cease the use of defamation suits against individuals and should instead respond to any allegation with appropriate evidence, says the Malaysian Bar.

It said that the government, as a public body, cannot take offence in the same manner as a private individual.

"It does not bode well for the present Government's efforts in opening up the democratic space and in fostering public trust and confidence. He said while there was a preceding decision to support such a case in the Federal Court, the Malaysian Bar had"grave reservations" about the ruling. "When the Government is the subject of a suit, it should make all efforts to explain and be responsible for the decisions and actions of its officers.
