Malaysia’s political crisis leaves PM Muhyiddin with make-or-break Budget challenge

Tuesday, 27 Oct 2020 04:59 PM MYT

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah refused Muhyiddin’s request for an emergency, but also rebuked politicians for engaging in a power struggle that could destabilise the government as it works towards delivering a Budget to help the nation weather the pandemic.

Anwar’s claim of having secured a majority in parliament also looms over Muhyiddin, especially after ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak asked some lawmakers in the ruling coalition to back Anwar. Given the infighting, there is no guarantee that all ruling coalition lawmakers would vote in favour of the Budget — despite Umno’s reaffirmation of support for Muhyiddin.
