KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has a sufficient rice stockpile and is higher than neighbouring countries, says Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee.

“We have 290 tonnes from Padiberas Nasional Bhd plus the trading stockpile and from the local harvest from states which is done on a rotation basis.

“So we have a consistent supply throughout the year. We are not facing a shortage,” he said during the debate on the Control of Padi and Rice Bill 2022 in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday .He said Malaysia was also looking to increase its self-sufficient level to reduce the 30% of imports. “The aim is to increase production from an average of 3.5 tonnes per ha to 7 tonnes in 10 years,” he said.

Earlier in the debate, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin had asked if Malaysia only had a stockpile of one month. The Control of Padi and Rice Bill 2022 was passed after it was tabled for the second and third readings on Tuesday. The amendment for the Bill seeks to allow the minister the power to appoint public officers such as deputy directors-general as well as to introduce a new provision for compoundable offences.
