PETALING JAYA: A senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer was sentenced to three years in prison and whipping after he pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Feb 18) to an alternative charge of dishonest misappropriation of US$6.94mil (RM29.04mil) seized by the commission in former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation chief Datuk Hasanah Ab Hamid’s case.

Shahrum Nizam Baharuddin, who was originally charged with misappropriation under Section 409 of the Penal Code, was offered the lesser charge of dishonest misappropriation under Section 403 of the same code.

He was alleged to have committed the offence between Dec 17, 2018, and April 9, 2019, at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.- Bernama
