NSTnation: Malaysian Indians ushered in the TamilNewYear yesterday in a simple yet meaningful way while the nation remained under the MovementControlOrder (MCO) to curb the spread of the Covid19 pandemic.

ChithiraiWhile the world is at war with the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysian Indians welcoming the New Year played down the celebrations, as many could not return home to be with their families.yesterday, S. Parimala, 53, said the celebration this year was simple with time spent with immediate family members, unlike before where close relatives would join them at her house in Jalan Klang Lama here.

Normally, she said, the preparations to usher in the New Year would start on the eve by filling a platter with fruits, vegetables, flowers, new clothes, gold or silver jewellery and money as a symbol of good fortune. She said this year’s food preparation was only a fraction of what she had been cooking in previous years.

“Having them around was helpful to prepare the traditional vegetarian lunch,” she said, adding that the two came to visit from Johor prior to the MCO and have been stuck there since.
