NSTletters: It is time we paid attention to this matter and took measures to protect our eyes.

We rely on it to complete many tasks. We do not realise that it affects our focus on our surroundings and takes a toll on our health.

The artificial blue light emitted from gadgets sends signals to our brain that are similar to signals from natural blue light. Our brain assumes it is still daytime and this affects our sleeping pattern. This shows how much artificial blue light affects our eyes. Ordinarily, human brain detects and interprets natural blue light from the sun, and tells our body it is morning and this keeps our mind fresh. We have a biological clock that is also known as the circadian rhythm. It is a cycle between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. This is why the younger generation is having more sleep problems.

As productive as the digital workplace can be, blue light poses a new threat to employees. They are exposed to artificial blue light for long hours, causing eyestrain and headache. The easiest way we can protect our eyes is to cut down time spent on smartphones. We should encourage face-to- face conversation rather than rely virtual communication as it refines human connections.
