KOTA KINABALU: A special task force has been set up to tackle the problem of coral thefts in waters off Sabah's diving haven of Semporna.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the task force comprising Sabah Parks and Sabah Wildlife Department was tasked to put a stop to any such activities in waters that is also home to renowned Pulau Sipadan.

However, Liew said the coral stealing activities were not within the Sipadan Island Park and Tun Sakaran Marine Park area that comprise of at least five islands and also reefs covering about 350sq km. Facebook user Laili Basir said that they were not aware if harvesting corals was done legally or illegally but were alerting the public of the activity.
