KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 1 Lee Zii Jia ran out of gas in the first round of the Indonesian Masters – just days after enjoying a high at the home tournament.

The 21-year-old went down 21-17,21-23,12-21 to world No. 26 Huang Yuxiang of China in a 62-minute opening round match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. It was his first meeting against the 26-year-old fifth ranked player from China.

Last week, the world No. 13 Zii Jia was riding high when he did well to upset several big names, including world No. 3 Anders Antonsen of Denmark, former All-England champion Shi Yuqi of China before losing to eventual champion Kento Momota of Japan in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Masters at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.“Zii Jia played okay in the opening game and gave all out in the second but lost it.

“His focused wavered towards the end and tiredness crept in. Credit to his opponent for maintaining his speed throughout the match. It was a good day for Malaysia in the men’s doubles when all four pairs – Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi cleared their opening round matches.

Today all the four pairs face Mathias Boe-Mads Conrad-Petersen , Di Zijian-Wang Chang , Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin and Jones Ralfy Jansen-Peter Kaesbauer respectively.Men’s doubles: Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani bt Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov 21-15,18-21,21-16; Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi bt Han Chengkai-Zhou Haodong 21-18,21-17; Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong bt Liao Min-chun-Su Ching-heng 21-18,21-17; Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik bt Wahyu Nayaka Pangkaryanira-Ade Yusuf Santoso 21-17,22-20.
