PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percentage points month-on-month in June 2020 to 4.9%, from a record high of 5.3% in May, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reported.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the number of jobless reduced by 52,900 to 773,200 during the month, showing a slight improvement in Malaysia’s labour force situation as more economic sectors reopened following the recovery movement control order phase.

“During the month, the number of employed persons grew marginally by 0.7% month-on-month from -0.3% in May 2020 to record 14.99 million persons. “Among others, employed persons increased for e-commerce activity, delivery services and information and communication technology-related activities,” he said in a statement yesterday.

In the meantime, he said the number of employed persons who were temporarily not working due to MCO declined by more than 65% to 768,000, from 2.27 million in May last year.
