THAI men’s singles star Kunlavut Vitidsarn (pic) is out to capture the prestigious Malaysian Open title just like his idol Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Former great Chong Wei had won the title a whopping 12 times and Kunlavut is now hoping to win his maiden crown.

The world No. 9 had to fight tooth and nail to overcome Indonesia’s world No. 24 Shesar Hiren 23-21, 19-21, 24-22 in a thrilling first-round match at the Axiata Arena that lasted 66 minutes.“My opponent played well while it wasn’t my best performance. Luckily, I managed to do better at the crucial moments.”

“It’s very difficult to stay at the top as the competition is so fierce. There are so many good players,” he said.
