Badan amal Aid to the Church in Need telah mengumumkan bahawa ia menyediakan 465,000 Euro sebagai sokongan bagi para paderi dan religius di Sri Lanka, agar mereka dapat melanjutkan pelayanan penting mereka pada masa krisis ini.

Kesukaran ekonomi dan kewangan di Sri Lanka bermula pada 2019, dengan meningkatnya hutang umum diburukkan lagi oleh pandemik Covid-19. Kenaikan harga makanan dan tenaga juga semakin parah pada tahun 2022 disebabkan peperangan di Ukraine, menyebabkan Sri Lanka hampir kehabisan dolar AS untuk import dan gagal membayar pinjaman luar negara.

Rasa marah dan tidak puas hati terhadap kerajaan tentang cara mereka menyelesaikan isu ini menyebabkan ratusan ribu orang mengambil alih gedung-gedung pemerintah di Colombo, memaksa Presiden Gotabaya Rajapaksa meninggalkan negara itu serta mengundurkan diri. Semasa doa Angelus pada 17 Julai lalu, Sri Paus Fransiskus mengungkapkan kedekatannya dengan rakyat Sri Lanka, bergabung dengan para pemimpin agama negara itu dalam menyerukan semua orang untuk menahan diri dari segala bentuk kekerasan dan untuk memulai proses dialog demi kebaikan bersama. — ucanews.com
