Kebanyakan mangsa dikaitkan dengan wanita berusia 61 tahun yang dikenali sebagai “Pesakit 31” yang menghadiri sebuah gereja, senario yang digambarkan pihak berkuasa kesihatan sebagai “peristiwa penyebaran terbesar”. Kebanyakan pesakit awal di Korea Selatan telah pulih, walaupun dilaporkan berlaku kematian pertama akibat virus pada Khamis.
