The 130-year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang is open to the public, except the mid-section where one of the prayer rooms in the main shrine hall was damaged in a fire.

Temple trustee Datuk Seri Steven Ooi Teik Heng said the public could still visit the enormous 30.2m-tall bronze statue of the Goddess Guan Yin and park their cars at the open- air or basement carpark.

Last Tuesday, a fire gutted the annex of one of the newer structures. However, the 121-year-old Sanskrit bell in the room was unscathed in the fire believed to have started from a lit oil lamp. “During the movement control order, we took the opportunity to renovate one of the prayer halls and pagoda,” he said in a phone interview on Saturday.
