SOME households still keep antiques left behind by the elders in the family. Irenda Edat of Kg Potuki, Penampang, values antiques and still keeps certain items left by her paternal grandmother Nulian Empok.

“I remember seeing many of those when I was very young. They probably had been in existence for centuries. Bundusan plant is a long hardy grass which used to be very popular among the natives for making the mats and baskets.Hence, the name of a road “Jalan Bundusan” in Penampang was called, as that area was swampy and fully grown with Bundusan plants in the early days, she said.

She advised those who still have certain items in their possession to keep them for remembrance sake. She said it is also a form of respect towards their elders, in keeping the legacy alive. She had documented in her book on the research she made on various basketry and ornaments produced by the natives all over Sabah, of which she concluded more than 70% of those items had extinct. Many of those she interviewed had also passed on thereafter.
