PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Junior Eldstal’s strong showing in Thailand’s top league is set to give him an edge in selection for the AFF Suzuki Cup.

The 30-year-old has started in 11 out of 12 games for Chonburi in the Thai League One and has helped the club finish fourth with 24 points, just two behind table-toppers Bangkok United.

His leadership, aggression, and strength in the middle of defence have been lauded and it’s likely to convince coach Tan Cheng Hoe to name him for the Suzuki Cup in Singapore from Dec 6-Jan 2. “Hopefully, I will be in the team. I can contribute. I was given the role to lead the young boys in the absence of foreign centreback Ranato Kelic and we managed to win important points in Thailand,” said Junior.Junior, who has 10 caps with the national team and played for Johor Darul Ta’zim and Sarawak in the past, said he had gained much from playing with Chonburi.

“Chonburi have a good mixture of young talent and good leaders. They are strong contenders in the league and I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere there,” he said.“The league is one of the best in Southeast Asia.“I hope to be physically strong and stay injury-free to remain as one of the main players in the league.”
