KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional led the popular vote in the Johor election with 599,753 votes, or 43.11% of all ballots cast.

According to the Election Commission dashboard on its website, 1,426,573 people cast their ballots, or 54.92% of the 2,597,742 eligible voters in Johor.

PKR, which contested using its own logo, obtained 82,556 votes while Muda, which contested in an election for the first time, received 48,072 votes .Meanwhile, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air obtained 18,692 votes followed by Independent candidates with 10,007 votes , Warisan with 6,523 votes and Parti Bangsa Malaysia with 4,880 votes .

Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia political analyst Assoc Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said the percentage of popular votes favouring Barisan resulted from loyal voters who wanted the coalition to take over the state administration. “Hasni is said to have helped those affected by Covid-19, especially Chinese traders in the state, with plans under his leadership,” he said when contacted by Bernama.Commenting on Perikatan’s higher share of popular vote compared with Pakatan – even though Pakatan won more seats – Sivamurugan said with the “first past the post” system practised in the country, the number did not represent the number of seats won.
