JOHOR BARU: Over RM8.7mil worth of contraband cigarettes and zam zam water were seized by the Customs Department here following checks on two separate locations here.

Johor Customs Department director Sazali Mohamad said that the first case was on Dec 28 last year during an inspection that was conducted by the department at the inspection bay of Pasir Gudang Port, here."Inspection inside the container found over 7.9 million sticks of white cigarettes worth RM8,712,000 inclusive of duties and tax.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 30 of the Free Zone Regulations 2019, Section 133 and 135 of the Customs Act 1967 for illegal import of prohibited goods and wrongful declaration of goods. "The value of the zam zam water is estimated to be RM66,000, and is set to be exported to Singapore," he said, adding that a lorry driver and his assistant, aged 30 and 21, were arrested to help with investigations.
