Johor Customs seizes more than RM135,000 in contraband in two ops

JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department here seized contraband worth more than RM135,000 in two separate operations.

"Our marine Customs and MMEA officers conducted checks on the ship and found 2,172 bottles of liquor hidden in the vessel's cargo area."The trade value of the liquor is priced at RM19,404 and its tax is at RM94,416," he said during a press conference also attended by Johor MMEA director First Admiral Aminuddin Abdul Rashid at Menara Kastam here on Monday (Sept 23).

Mohammad Hamiddan said the ship's 10 Indonesian crewmen, aged between 22 and 50, were detained while the vessel and liquor had been seized as part of investigations.The case, he added, was classified under Section 49(1) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 135(1)(e) of the same Act.

Meanwhile, Aminuddin said MMEA and Customs would continue to work closely to safeguard the country's borders and stop illegal smuggling activities involving drugs, weapons, and even terrorists."This is part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy where agencies come together and conduct operations. We will continue with such practices," he said.

In the second case, Mohammad Hamiddan said a team of Customs enforcement officers inspected a black Toyota Alphard at Taman Austin here on the same day at around 3.30pm.Checks on the vehicle found 1,200 beer cans with a trade value of RM3,000 with tax worth RM18,496, he added.

"A local 40-year-old man was arrested and has been charged at the Magistrate's Court here," he said, adding that the vehicle and items were seized.Mohammad Hamiddan urged the public to channel information on any smuggling activities to the department at its toll-free 1-800-88-8855.
