JOHOR BARU: Police have detained a man for allegedly storing cigarettes smuggled in from Indonesia at an unused shoplot in Pontian district about 87km from here.

The Southern Region Two Marine Police Asst Comm Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said the 34-year-old suspect, believed to be the owner of the shoplot located in Kampung Permata Duku, Pontian, was arrested at around 8.15pm on Wednesday .

"Initial investigation showed that the cigarettes were meant for the local market, particularly the Pontian district, '' ACP Khiu said in a press statement.
