PETALING JAYA: Malaysia are likely to return home empty-handed from the World Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia, unless Yap Roy King rises to the occasion with Ooi Jhy Dar and Gan Jing Err in the boys’ and mixed doubles events respectively.

The individual competitions start today and based on the draw released on Saturday, eighth seeds Roy King-Jhy Dar are likely to take on top seeds and defending champions Wang Chang-Di Zijian of China in the quarter-finals.

But Roy King-Jhy Dar are certainly better prepared this time after having arrived in Kazan with two titles — the Malaysian International Junior Challenge and Indian International Junior Grand Prix. But it will still be tricky as the sixth seeds are in the same quarter with third seeds Ratchapol Makkasasithorn-Benyapa Aimsaard of Thailand. They lost 17-21,21-16,10-21 to the Thais in the semi-finals of the Indian Junior International Grand Prix in August.Top-ranked boys’ singles player Jacky Kok Jing Hong is expected to cross paths with top seed and two-time champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the last 16.

Arena is set to face fourth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia while Letshanaa has fifth seed Han Qianxi of China standing in her way — both as early as the second round.
