JPJ enforcers on motorcycles will patrol popular cycling routes too, and cyclists found violating traffic rules or endangering others will be stopped and given an earful, said Penang JPJ operations unit chief Hasbullah Abu Bakar.“As the popularity of cycling in Penang is on the rise, many cyclists share the road with motorists with much bigger and faster vehicles.
“The key is to ensure sufficient space for other road users by not hoarding the lane and cycling in a single file. Bicycles should also be equipped with lights when dark and riders themselves should wear colours that are visible to other road users. “No fines were issued to cyclists so far and such operations, conducted about once monthly, were not meant to deter cycling but to educate the cycling community.”
