NEW DELHI: India’s technology ministry has written to Facebook Inc-owned WhatsApp asking the messenger to withdraw its updated privacy policy, which came into effect on May 15, in its biggest market by users, two government sources said on Thursday.

The technology ministry’s May 18 letter to WhatsApp also said the government could take legal action against the firm if it did not comply with the provision of India’s Information Technology Act, one of the sources said, adding that the company has been asked to respond by May 25.India’s technology ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

“No accounts were deleted on May 15 because of this update and no one in India lost functionality of WhatsApp either.”
