Immigration D-G: System glitch, damaged passport printer led to congestion at High Commission in Singapore

Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud speaks to members of the media in Putrajaya April 22, 2020. — Bernama picKUALA LUMPUR, March 19 ― The Malaysian Immigration Department today pinned the congestion and long queues at the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore to system glitches and damage to one of the passport printers there.

Khairul said applications will be processed and the passports will be printed in four to five weeks. He further explained that previously, Malaysians in Singapore would return to renew their passports in Johor Baru, but due to the border closure, this has caused congestion at the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore.

According to Khairul, on normal days, the Malaysian Immigration office in Singapore is capable of processing as many as 100 passport renewal applications per day.

Long queues at Malaysian High Commission in Singapore leave many frustratedMany have taken to social media to express their frustrations. One Facebook user, who had to renew his passport in January, compared it to queueing for concert tickets. Another said the elderly and wheelchair users had to wait for hours under the sun. 30 walk in per day? Better just said you don’t want to work. This is the level of embassy service abroad, no other word, just shameful. Despite seeing the crowd why no one even try to handle or inform the people? Because the person queue up was ordinary folks not VIP?
