How to file your taxes for the first time

If you’ve just entered the workforce, here’s a handy guide on how to file your taxes for the first time. — Picture courtesy of RinggitPlus

Before we begin, you should first determine if you are eligible as a taxpayer. According to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, a Malaysian individual must register a tax file if they earn If your annual employment income is above that figure, you will need to do two things: Register yourself as a taxpayer to the IRB, and then register for e-Filing, which is the IRB’s online income tax filing platform. There are a few stages to this process, which we will delve into below.

From there, you will need to wait up to a week before the IRB processes and approves your application.Once your application has been approved, you now need to register for e-Filing. You’ll need a PIN number for first-time login for this, and unfortunately, for this you need to physically head over to the nearest IRB office. Once you have the PIN, head on to the e-Filing website and click on “Login Kali Pertama”.
