NEW YORK, May 3 — Reading is not always a pleasurable activity for young people, it seems. Many do it out of obligation rather than out of genuine love for the written word. And this decline in reading for pleasure appears not to be unrelated to the rise of the internet and social media.

The National Literacy Trust came to a similar conclusion after surveying more than 42,500 British children and teenagers. Only 48 per cent of the young people surveyed said they enjoyed reading in 2020. Four years earlier, 58.6 per cent of them had a real taste for reading. This decline can be explained in particular by the predominant place that screens now occupy in the daily lives of young people.
