Sabah News

News,Newspaper,Headlines

WITH the drastically declining resources from natural forests, forest plantations play an increasingly important role as an alternative source of timber to meet the demand for the wood industries and to generate revenue for the State.

Under the Action Plan on Forest Plantation Development launched in 2022, the State Government has targeted to establish some 400,000 ha of forest plantations by 2036.

This programme is working closely with various Forest Management Units , plantation smallholders and wood industry players towards the success of plantation forestry in Sabah. Furthermore, studies on physical characteristics, anatomical features, strength and wood working properties of such timbers shall develop more valuable new uses of the timber products for both exotic and indigenous species from plantation grown forests as well as from natural forests.

Hence, this programme focuses on wood and non-wood science and utilisation, potential uses of herbal and medicinal plants. These include contributions to the overall economy – for example through employment, processing and trade of forest products and energy, and investments in the forest sector. They also include the hosting and protection of sites and landscapes of high cultural, spiritual or recreational value.
