Dr Mahathir Mohamad is flanked by Doshisha University president Takashi Matsuoka and chancellor Eiji Hatta after receiving an honorary doctorate yesterday.

Mahathir, who is on a official visit to Japan, said China might not tolerate a further escalation and might use force to end the impasse if it persists or worsens. “If they cannot handle this and this does not stop and the demands become more and more for autonomy or independence, then I think the Chinese will not tolerate that.”

Bernama quoted Doshisha University president Takashi Matsuoka as saying that Mahathir, during his previous premiership, had introduced the Look East Policy that had not only seen more than 15,000 Malaysian students and trainees sent to Japan but also contributed to nation-building.
