NSTnation: “Malaysia has the third highest rate of deaths from road traffic accidents in South East Asia

In a statement issued today, MMA said many innocent lives have been lost in an accident caused by drunk drivers or those driving under the influence of drugs.

“It is high time for tougher laws to be put in place to address this growing concern and MMA applauds the government for this move. “We hope that apart from the stiffer penalties, there will be increased enforcement to be carried out on a regular basis. “Malaysia has the third highest rate of deaths from road traffic accidents in South East Asia. The number of deaths caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs which has been reported numerous times in the media is worrying,” it said.

On Wednesday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook reportedly said that the Cabinet had agreed for three sections under the Road Transport Act 1987, namely Section 41, 44 and 45, to be amended to tighten the existing laws with harsher penalties.- BERNAMA

The main culprits are not the tipsy drivers, drivers that drives at 40-60 kph and hogging the road. They prefer to stay on the right lanes of highways. Also the bikers who believe that they are given the right to zip along between lanes n cars hv to give way. We r the victims!
