Today, my daughters themselves are parents. Looking at how they are bringing their children up, I cannot help but admire them for their parenting skills as compared to mine. The younger children dreaded their timeout at the corner, with nobody to rescue them. They were only allowed to leave the corner after they had learned a painful lesson.

I remember spoon-feeding my brood while they were watching TV, and then felt satisfied when they finished the food. I now see the grandchildren sitting at the table with the adults and eating by themselves. Never mind if the floor is littered by the younger kids but they get through their meals. No need to fuss about whether they eat or not. The choice is theirs, and the children know the consequences if they do not eat. They will just go hungry.

I was surprised when my friend’s children, one of whom was only 12 years old, presented me with a beautiful cheesecake, and another one gave me a jar of lovely green tea cookies. Another young mum makes sure that her sons, aged seven and nine, make their beds before they go to school.
