Heart and Soul: Nostalgic about my alma mater, SMK Mahmud, Raub

The events that have taken place in the school, during my schooling and teaching days, certainly bring back nostalgic memories. Ajmeer Singh would every morning position himself at the staff quarters, which was on higher ground – a vantage point to see who were the latecomers to school. Chiam later moved to Singapore, where he had a very successful career in politics, being an assemblyman of a constituency for a number of terms.

During the 1960s, the school field was also the venue for interstate cricket matches. I was fortunate enough to witness Singapore and Negri Sembilan coming over to play against Pahang. The highlight of the JKR sports was not the athletics events but the pillow fights at the end. In a makeshift canvas pool of water, measuring about 20ft x 20ft x 5ft, a long cylindrical pole would be horizontally placed over two crossed structures, and tied firmly. The pole would be well greased.
