NEW YORK, Oct 27 ― The head of the New York City firefighters union said yesterday he had instructed unvaccinated members to keep working, even though they feel “insulted” by Mayor Bill de Blasio's order to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination by tomorrow or be placed on unpaid leave.

“And if they are told they cannot work, it will be the department and city of New York that sends them home. And it will be the department and the city of New York that has failed to protect the citizens of New York,” Ansbro said. “There is no greater privilege than serving the people of New York City, and that privilege comes with a responsibility to keep yourself and your community safe,” the Democratic mayor of the largest US city said in a statement announcing the mandate. The New York City Fire Department has about 17,000 employees, including emergency medical services staff, firefighters and civilian employees. About 68 per cent of have been vaccinated, the department said.
