Marylise Leon, second in command of the French Democratic Confederation of Labour, will succeed him.

Berger, 54, announced his exit in an interview with Le Monde newspaper. Marylise Leon, second in command of the French Democratic Confederation of Labour , will succeed him, he said.

Berger's exit means France's two biggest unions will soon have new leadership after Philippe Martinez left the helm of the hardline CGT recently. He was also replaced by a woman, Sophie Binet. "I realise this is particular period, who knows if it will be any different in October or in June? I am not essential to the CFDT," he said.
