A total of 1,658 schools in KL, Selangor, Putrajaya and Penang have been ordered to close for two days from tomorrow as the general air quality drops to ‘very unhealthy’ levels due to the worsening haze.
Teachers were also given the option to work from home if their schools were involved in the closure, the statement added. The index is categorised into six levels with an API reading of 0-50 being considered satisfactory and a reading of 301-500 being declared a state of emergency. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency said the Malaysian Meteorological Department had predicted there would be moderate to thick haze in several areas around Malaysia until September 19 affecting visibility in Sarawak, West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and the East Coast of Sabah.
