Haikal-Arif welcome Ramadan with great show in France

The world No. 13 continued their gallant run at the Orleans Masters when they defeated higher ranked pair Eloi Adam-Julien Maio of France with a superb 21-18, 21-16 win despite fasting on Saturday to enter the men’s doubles final.

Next, they will meet seventh seeds Ruben Jille-Ties van Der Lecq of Holland, who had beaten Malaysians Yap Roy King-Chang Yee Jun in the quarter-finals. Earlier, Haikal-Arif had been a thorn in the flesh to two other higher ranked French pairs when they knocked out second seeds and world No. 30 Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov in the opening round and world No. 56 Lucas Corvee-Ronan Labar 21-13, 12-21, 21-15 in the quarter-finals.“Haikal and I had discussed with our coach Tan Bin Shen on the tactical plans before the semis and did our homework well. We’re happy to reach the final,” said Arif.

“It’s the first time that we have played in a tournament while we were fasting but we still had the energy and mental strength to win.The duo reached five finals in lower-ranked tournaments last year. They won three titles at the Austrian Open, Hellas International in Greece, the Ukraine International and came out second in the Latvia International and Scottish Open.
