BEIJING: One year after creating the food safety lock, which has become popular nationwide, the Xuhui district Market Regulation Administration in Shanghai has introduced guidelines on its use and manufacture.

Similar to a luggage tag and secured around a carrying bag, it has to be broken to be unlocked. The disposable lock is intended to guarantee that food is not tampered with during delivery from the restaurant to the customer.

After the administration introduced the food safety lock in June last year, food delivery giant Meituan adopted it and has since had millions of its orders “locked” with the device. The administration also said a recent Internet market regulation proposal by eight central government departments should be followed.
