Hundreds of thousands of Malaysians have signed up for the e-Tunai programme in the hope of getting the RM30 credit.

PUTRAJAYA: The government has dismissed fears that its e-Tunai Rakyat iniative which deposits a RM30 credit into e-Wallet accounts of eligible Malaysians is an attempt to collect personal information. But Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the programme would give the authorities some ideas about Malaysians’ spending habits.

“I don’t see how this can be construed as an effort to get personal information,” he told reporters when asked about the concerns aired on social media.Lim said the government would find no use with people’s personal data as it is not involved in business or trading.The government said the e-Tunai Rakyat initiative was aimed at encouraging cashless transactions among the public.

Malaysians aged 18 and above with a yearly income less than RM100,000 will be eligible to receive RM30 each through any of the participating e-wallets after completing a short application process.As of yesterday, 784,000 applications were received with 672,000 approved.
