Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said the increase in quota was for 4,030 petrol stations nationwide and the move was to avoid a shortage of fuel supply as occurred last year.
In May last year, it was reported that several petrol stations were experiencing fuel supply shortages due to unexpectedly higher demand of up to 50 per cent during the Aidilfitri festive period. However, Salahuddin said the ministry had taken a friendly approach by only giving advice to the traders involved and that legal action would be imposed if they repeated the offence.
He added that there were traders in several locations who sold fresh chicken above the control price of RM9.40 per kg because they claimed to be receiving the supplies via two to three layers of wholesalers, and were also forced to impose a cutting charge of RM1.
