KUALA LUMPUR: The Government should consider setting up a Rental Relief Fund to avert a looming homeless crisis, says Klang MP Charles Santiago.

"It is crucial that such a fund is set up as there are cases of families being evicted from their homes after they are unable to pay their rents due to loss of income or jobs during the Covid-19 lockdown.

While acknowledging the government's effort to waive rent for six months, he said this only applied to government-owned flats and properties or those under the local authorities. "This would feed into the narrative of people not being able to fork out their rent money," he added. He said that rent subsidy up to March next year should also be provided to SMEs which had experienced 30% drop in their businesses.
