“The villagers decided to decorate the village with new artworks to give tourists more reasons to come that the people are allowed to travel more freely,” he said. She revealed that one of the main pieces would feature a three-dimensional 1.5m x 1.5m bowl of lei cha, a famous Hakka ground tea-based dish filled with rice, vegetables, peanuts and sesame seeds.
“We painted over the exterior of a toilet to make it look like a matchbox and the pair of spiders were made from recycled materials to celebrate a favourite childhood pastime of spider-fighting,” she said, adding that the piece took about two weeks to complete. “I am impressed by the community’s hospitality,” she said, adding that she packed Hakka kuih and sampled local coffee.
