The Church of the Immaculate Conception, like a mustard seed sown by its MEP progenitors 140 years ago, sprouted and blossomed into a vibrant spiritual hub for Johor Bahru Catholics.
Over the years it has borne much fruit to feed the spiritual hunger of many, and offered shade and solace to those who were weary and lost. He purchased land and built many chapels in Johor. What we see today are the fruits of Fr Duvelle’s vision. The dedication of many of the foreign missionaries knew no bounds.
The same year saw the first major renovation in the parish. Coloured glass windows and louvers for the upper and lower sections of the building were added to the interior of the church to brighten it. The interior and exterior walls were also re-painted. In 1971, the second major renovation took place.
After Mass, parishioners enjoyed a dinner fellowship on the church grounds. The current Sultan of Johor, DYMM Sultan Mahmud Iskandar, the Sultanah, and members of the royal family graced the occasion, attended by more than 2,000 faithful.
