Up to 1950, the coastal town of Mersing did not have a church building. A group of Catholics, mainly Indians, attended Mass at an estate conductor’s house. Other services, like baptism and weddings, were conducted by the priest resident at the Church of St Louis, Kluang.
It was only in 1956 that Archbishop Michael Olcomendy, MEP, authorised Fr Danion, the then parish priest of the Church of St Louis, Kluang, to start work on a chapel. With financial assistance from the local and outstation churches, the new chapel was built and blessed by the prelate in May 1957. The chapel fell under the jurisdiction of the Church of St Louis.
Catechism started in August 1957, and a year later, the first batch of children received their First Holy Communion. In 1962, Fr Claude Barreteau, MEP, succeeded Fr Danion. He supervised the teaching of hymns and catechism classes for First Communicants and Confirmands. Fr Barreteau invited the archbishop to officiate at the First Holy Communion and Confirmation service of 20 children and adults.
