NSTnation: Malaysia is among the countries which mark International Day for Older Persons (Idop) on Oct 1, and International Day for Persons of Disabilities (IDPD) on Dec 3 annually.

However, the number of persons above 65 in the country is expected to increase to 15 per cent by 2030 due to better healthcare and longer life expectancy rates.

The event began with a series of lectures to create greater awareness on disability issues. Awards were also presented to persons with disabilities for their achievements in overcoming the odds in their careers and lives. She said people with disabilities must be assisted by the public to achieve full and equal participation in all spheres of society. Malaysian Association of Rehabilitation Physicians president and winner of the Tokoh Rehabilitasi Award associate professor Dr Nazirah Hasnan shared her experiences in creating opportunities for people with disabilities.“Having the opportunity to dive into the sea and view sea life and corals can give people with disabilities new hope.”
