KOTA KINABALU: A temporary relocation centre has been activated in Penampang district as the water level continues to rise following a downpour on Wednesday (July 12).

Penampang district officer Francis Chong, who chairs the district disaster management committee, announced that the shelter at Penampang Sports Complex was activated at 8.50pm.

"After getting information that the Moyog River water level has reached 9m and upon advice by Penampang deputy OCPD DSP Sammy Newton, I declare the Penampang temporary relocation centre open," he said in a statement. Besides Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and neighbouring Tuaran and Papar districts of Sabah's west coast saw low lying areas have been hit by heavy rain.

These districts have been hit by intermittent wet spells in the last few days, but it was worse on Wednesday, causing flash flood in certain locations.
