MELAKA: A police inspector and four other policemen have been remanded for five days to assist in investigations into allegations of graft involving a total amount of RM6,200.

The remand order for the five cops, aged between 25 to 50 years, was issued by magistrate Muhammad Nazrin Ali at the Ayer Keroh court complex here on Tuesday .

The five from the Jasin police headquarters’ narcotics department were detained between 5pm and 11pm on Monday by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission . They are being probed under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years or fine up to RM10,000 upon conviction.

The cops are believed to have solicited the amount as an inducement not to act against a 30-year-old man who was found to be in possession of"air ketum" and illicit cigarettes at Taman Wira at Bemban in Jasin, sometime in March this year.
