According to Bernama, Fahmi said that the feature is disabled because Google is aiming to resolve various technical issues pertaining to wrong conversion rates involving the MYR. He stressed that this decision is made by Google and not based on any directive from a particular party. Fahmi revealed that Google informed him of their decision following discussions with Bank Negara Malaysia and the move was to prevent future errors in displaying RM exchange rates. The Communications Minister further asserted that he had personally reached out to Google to ensure the matter was addressed.
He said that the MYR exchange rate will be restored once all the necessary processes by Google are finalised.
