KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Peter Anthony, whose nomination to contest the Tenom seat in the 15th General Election was rejected by the returning officer, has filed an election petition to challenge the decision.

Anthony, who is Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat president, confirmed yesterday that he had instructed his lawyers to file the election petition.

The petition comes following the Dec 14 gazetting of the results and statement of the polls for the Nov 19, general election.Under the Election Regulations , any disputes over the returning officer’s decision are only resolved through election petitions. At the time of filing the nominations, Anthony was appealing his conviction by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, which sentenced him to three years in jail and a fine of RM50,000 for a corruption offence.

Following the rejection of the nomination papers, Anthony claimed that his papers were initially accepted but later rejected.
